Mary Kom Biography

Mary Kom was born on 01 March 1983 in Kangthei, Chudchanpur district of Manipur. Her full name is Mangate Chugneijang Mary Kom but she is famous as Magnificent Mary or simply Mary Kom. She has been the first Indian boxer of the Kom tribe of North East, she has also been the only woman boxer to have won medals in five international competitions. His father Mangte Tompa Kom and mother Mangate Akham Kom Jhoom used to do farming.

After studying in various schools, he graduated from the college of his own district. My com was interested in athletics from the beginning but the success of Dingko Singh inspired her to become a boxer. He started boxing practice under the direction of Manipur State Boxing Coach M. Narjeet Singh. His practice continued at Khuman Lampak place in Imphal. Boxing was not considered good for girls, so Mary Kom had to hide her family about her sport for a long time.

When the Manipur state boxing championship was won in 2000 and his photo appeared in the newspaper, it was only then that the father and other family members came to know that the daughter was a boxer. In the meantime, he was married to K. Alan Kom and was born twin sons. His international career began by participating in the first EIV Women’s World Boxing Championship. Won the Silver Medal in the 48 kg weight category in this competition held in America (2001).

Won Gold Medal in 45 kg category held in Turkey in 2002. Won Gold Medal in Asian Woman Boxing held in India in 2003. After this, he continued to win gold medals in Norway, Taiwan and Russia. Venus Women’s Box Cup also won gold in Denmark. There was a gap of two years after the birth of the children and in 2008 they received the silver medal in the AV Boxing Championship in India. For the first time in 2012, women’s boxing was ranked, Mary Kom participated and Bronze medal was won.

He unfurled the Indian flag at the closing ceremony at the Summer Olympics in London. The Manipur government gave him 50 lakh rupees and 2 acres of land in reward. The list of medals won by Mary Kom during her boxing period 2001-2012 is very long. At the international level, 18 medals out of which 14 in first, 3 in second and 1 in 3rd. He has the credit of winning 10 medals at the national level.

In addition to the Manipur government, Rajasthan, Assam and Arunachal governments also presented prize money for their achievements. 10 lakh rupees from Ministry of Tribal Affairs and 40 lakh rupees from North Eastern Council.
